With Apprenticeship Week running from 7th February, what vacancies are there in London?
Are Apprenticeship numbers increasing?
Before the recession (in 2007) 2 out of 10 vacancies taken by Connexions across London were Apprenticeships. Last year (2010) more than 5 out 10 Connexions vacancies were Apprenticeships.
Connexions Vacancies
Overall the number of vacancies taken by Connexions has gone up from 1,818 (in 2007) to 2,166 (in 2010) but this is due to the expansion of Apprenticeships – the number of other jobs has gone down.
What is available now?
On 2nd February 2011 there were 345 adverts for Apprenticeships in London on the national Apprenticeship vacancies
website.
Apprenticeship Vacancies in London (on 02/02/2011)
Retail & Commercial Enterprise vacancies include:
- 12 in Hairdressing
- 8 Hospitality & Catering
- Some Retail, Warehousing, Vehicle Sales, Property Services, Logistics and Cleaning
- McDonald’s are recruiting now and will have vacancies throughout the year
- Joshua Galvin Academy of Hairdressing also have vacancies available now and for those leaving education in the summer.
Leisure, Travel & Tourism currently has no vacancies in London, the closest being Travel Services at Gatwick Airport. Travel vacancies have been badly hit by the recession, but Active Leisure (eg sports centre) vacancies do come up.
Information & Communications Technology vacancies include:
- 32 IT & Telecomms Professionals
- 4 IT Users
- 2 ICT Professional
- QA Training and Zenos Academy have training centres across London and recruit throughout the year
- Virgin Media have some vacancies in South London now and will have more across London later in the year
- BT also have some vacancies now and those leaving education in the summer can register their interest.
Health, Public Services & Care vacancies include:
- 39 Children’s Care, Learning & Development (eg working in nurseries)
- 14 Health & Social Care
- Some in Youth Work and Housing.
Education & Training vacancies are all in Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools (eg teaching assistant).
Engineering & Manufacturing Technology vacancies include:
Construction only has 1 vacancy at present:
- Carillion will be recruiting throughout the year for bricklaying, carpentry, painting & decorating, plastering and general construction, with training centres in Kings Cross and West London
- Construction has also been badly hit by the recession, but there are normally more vacancies than this – last week there were 6 across London.
Business, Administration & Law vacancies include:
- 97 Business & Administration
- 28 Customer Service
- 7 Telesales
- Some Accounting and Marketing
- London 2012 Get Ahead School Leaver Programme are recruiting now for people (with 2 A Levels) to join them this summer to help organise the Olympics and Paralympics.
Art, Media & Publishing vacancies include:
- 7 Creative & Digital Media (eg film/video production and web/multimedia design)
- Creative Process based in New Cross will have creative & Digital Media vacancies throughout the year.
Agriculture, Horticulture & Animal Care vacancies include:
- The Royal Parks recruiting now for summer entry
