Helping your students make better career choices

A wide range of publications are available to your school for use with students to support them with career choices, job information and training opportunities, helping them make good careers choices now and in the future.

FUTURE JOB TRENDS AND LONDON LABOUR MARKET INFORMATION RESOURCES (LMI) 

The Job information sheets give young people and parents and carers knowledge of curent and future job trends which are important when making career choices, as well as listing a monthly update of live vacancies. The job information sheets would be useful to teachers to use in class rooms and also for parents & carers at home.

You should have now received a copy for each year 12 student of A guide for students in year 12, which includes information on diplomas & learning routes: hospitality; engineering; construction and the built environment; creative media; business and information technology and information technology.

USEFUL WEBSITES

Career websites can provide really useful video clips for use in lessons, research information for students & help for parents. A selection of the best websites are:

Career box - media clips from industry sectors and supported by the Institute for Careers Guidance.  Recently added clips include – stage by stage video clips of interview techniques.

iCould - media clips from people choosing different career options, including gap years and industry sectors - supported by CRAC.

The above sites are directly usable in a classroom giving you clips of people who have recently chossen a careers path telling you what it is like to be in a particular job.

Alliance Sector skills council – Useful to find out about career opportunities in different industries.

Choice - The London area-wide prospectus. It provides comphrehensive information on all London post 16 courses, training options, apprenticeships and jobs, all searchable through career, provider, subject, key word or location. This website can be useful to use during parents evenings.

Use the virtual careers library to find out what jobs involve, including wages.

Find out about apprenticeships and job opportunities across London.

MAILING TO THE PARENTS AND CARERS OF STUDENTS IN YEAR 9

A mailout will be distributed on 31st March 2010 to parents and carers of year 9 students, which will include a leaflet containing information on the key 14-19 learning options, decision times and a range of useful and helpful tips on their future course planning.

GUIDING STUDENTS ON DIPLOMAS? NEW - QCDA DIPLOMA VALIDATOR TOOL

The Diploma Validator tool is designed for people to check that learners are choosing eligible programmes of study to enable them to claim a Diploma at the end of their course.
