 Young Muslim Voices Speak Out

Hundreds of young Muslims came together in Islington last week  (25
November) to make their voices heard amongst community leaders.

The Young Muslim Voices conference held in Old Street, was organised by
the Islington based youth group Listen Up, as part of a long-term
project to empower young people from Muslim communities to speak out
about issues affecting them.  The conference is thought to be the
largest of its kind to have been held in the UK.

The event provided an opportunity for the group to raise awareness of
the issues affecting them and facilitate discussions around how
community services can better engage Muslim youths.  Invited guests
included Islington councillors, MPs, youth workers and representatives
from local mosques, the police and the voluntary sector.

A number of topics were tackled on the day, from the portrayal and
perceptions of young Muslims in the media, policing and the criminal
justice system; to the roles community, faith groups and the council can
play in empowering young people.  The specific challenges faced by young
Somali youths and Muslim women and girls were also discussed.

Islington Council's Executive Member for Children and Young People,
Councillor Ursula Woolley attended the event.  She said: "It was
inspiring and humbling to see so many Islington young people come
together at the conference and talk so thoughtfully and constructively
about difficult issues that make such a difference to them. Young Muslim
Voices are making a really positive contribution to youth work in the
borough."

The Young Muslim Voices project has engaged over 1300 Muslim and
non-Muslim young people in the last year. Group members - many of whom
come from disadvantaged or socially excluded backgrounds - have taken
part in a variety of events.   An anti racism football tournament called
'Kick Islamaphobia' was organised in April this year involving Arsenal
Football Club, local mosques and the police.  Other achievements include
a school arts project, a documentary about British Bangladeshi boys and
a film featuring young refugees and asylum seekers in Islington, which
was produced by members of the group.  Some members of Young Muslim
Voices are now receiving training to become participation workers.

The Young Muslim Voices report, a publication on the issues raised by
the project including recommendations for services and organisations was
launched at the conference, held at LSO St Lukes.

Noori Bibi, Young Muslim Voices Project Manager commented on the success
of the conference: "It a was truly memorable day and the young people
were inspirational. It was so encouraging to have so many decision
makers and faith and community leaders present to listen to the voices
of young people - especially those who don't always have the chance to
speak out.

"The conference was really productive as key figures like the leader of
Islington Council, Councillor James Kempton and Borough Commander Bob
Carr have agreed to meet with the young people to look at ways the
recommendations they've made can be taken forward.

I'm very proud that we have achieved so much in 14 months and we as a
project are very excited about working in partnership with council,
community and faith services across the borough to take the issues
forward and further engage and empower young people throughout
Islington."

Young Muslim Voices have been recognised for their youth engagement work
by being nominated for Philip Lawrence Award.  The winners will be
announced at the awards ceremony on 2 December.

UK suffers from lack of black and Asian women in politics

THE UK suffers from a "shockingly low" lack of black and minority ethnic women in local politics said the chairman of a government taskforce on equality.

Baroness Uddin, chair of the government's Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) taskforce called for more women from ethnic backgrounds to seek election.

Speaking at a conference hosted by Harrow Council in North London, the Peer said: "It is imperative we take action to increase numbers. Minority ethnic women are still vastly underrepresented in public life.

Muslim Integration in Europe

Is Europe Trying to Build a Fundamentalist Islam?

People with a Muslim background living in Europe are often reduced to their religious identity by the authorities in their countries. "Muslims" are seen as a problem group. But many immigrants do not identify themselves by religion. The American historian Philip Jenkins says that this religious identification by the authorities has highly damaging consequences.

..:: Poster Project ::..

RESPONDING TO LIVES...NOT EVENTS

The Muslim Youthwork Foundation is publishing a set of posters designed to capture ‘Muslim youth experiences’ which challenge and subvert the stereotypes and Islamophobic perceptions that Muslims and Muslim communities face today.

The counter-images they convey are intended to foster debate on media representations by reference to personal experience of Muslim youth identity and can be used in a variety of learning settings by teachers, youth workers and trainers or just as posters.

“For Muslim young people their faith identity has increasingly become  positive and equally painful to negotiate in a context that makes them vulnerable to acts of violence and discrimination by being labelled as the enemy within”

                                                                                                                               MG Khan (Muslim Youthwork Foundation)

The powerful imagery and text aims to generate understanding through visual depiction of feelings, challenges and choices. Young Muslims find themselves living in a social and political context that leaves them little choice but to engage with their religious identity. For many, the agenda of Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE) frames them as Potential Violent Extremists. The impacts these debates and policies have on young people’s lives socially, psychologically, physically and economically are framed within the posters.

To view the full range of posters in the Responding to lives not events poster project including purchasing copies go to http://www.mywf.org.uk/mywf_posters.php

FUNDING

The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has announced that 77 local authorities will receive additional funding of £25,000 each to provide activities for young people on Friday and Saturday nights in neighbourhoods where crime and anti-social behaviour are a concern. Ensuring youth centres stay open late at weekends and evenings forms part of the proposals announced in the government's Youth Crime Action Plan.

Capacitybuilders has announced the programmes across England that will receive £2.5 million of grant awards for the modernisation of third sector support. The projects have been put forward by local and regional consortia from the business plans developed last year. A full list of projects is available. It will also be announcing details of the next phase of investment – with a capital grants programme to improve the facilities available for organisations in third sector resource centres.

BBC Children in Need distributes grants to not-for-profit organisations working with disadvantaged children and young people, living in the UK. Grants from £500 to over £100,000 are available for up to three years. Deadline for applications is 15 January 2009.

Communities Secretary Hazel Blears has announced the 22 projects that will share in a £1.3m Community Leadership Fund aimed at supporting Muslim communities to unlock the potential of local people to take a lead on tackling violent extremism. One strand of the funding will be to support youth-led projects which develop the leadership skills of young people, including both formal and informal activities and training such as sports, workshops and mentoring. Recipients of the first funding round include the Muslim Youth Helpline and Muslim Youthwork Foundation.

POLICY

The DCSF has announced that it will be introducing new legislation to ensure that multi-agency Children’s Trusts Boards are operating in every local authority area. The Boards will consist of the local authority, health, police, schools and other services who will be legally required to work together to agree and deliver a Children and Young People’s Plan.

The DCSF has also published new guidance on Children’s Trusts.  The guidance takes into account the revised 2008 statutory guidance for local authorities and agencies on the ‘duty to cooperate’ to improve children’s well-being.  The guidance states that Trusts should involve and empower children, young people and their families in order to drive through change.  Alongside this guidance is a short leaflet which contains a simplified explanation of what a Children’s Trust is for and what it does.

The Government has introduced support for commissioning services for local authorities and Children’s Trusts partners.  The Commissioning Support Programme  will help Children’s Trusts to plan, design and implement services more effectively by providing tailored support as and when Trust partners need it, developing online resources and networks to help commissioners share best practice, and holding conferences.  The programme will run until April 2011.

The Government has introduced a change to the law to place a duty on all maintained schools in England and Wales to consider the views of children and young people. The provisions are introduced as new Section 29A of the Education Act 2002. A consultation on the regulations will take place in Spring 2009.
