The Harvey Nichols Apprenticeship scheme

The Harvey Nichols Apprenticeship scheme is for young people with a genuine passion for food and offers the opportunity to work and train in a busy prestigious restaurant guided by a team of talented chefs. After two years young people will gain a NVQ Level 3 and a guaranteed chef’s position at the end of the programme. Get Into Parks and Green Spaces

Young people who are 16-25, unemployed and available for one week of training could gain experience and training with the Prince’s Trust. They are running an Employability day on 13 May. Courses for young people

There are a number of courses available this month, including an Enterprise Skills course, offered by Fairbridge Training Unit on 15 and 22 May, administrative skills training from Pitman Training and a BAWL course at the Queen Mother Sports Centre on 10 June. BBC learning zone

BBC learning zone is looking for case studies of young people who have used online forums to facilitate campaigns for change as a part of a series of five minute films about digital media literacy. For more information please email:morgan.wynn-jones@illumina.co.uk.

Big Dance 2008 Photography Competition

Big Dance in partnership with London YouthDance is hosting a photography competition for all young budding photographers. The theme for the competition this year is;‘Dancing on the Streets of London’and is a chance to celebrate the spectacle of dance and the diverse beauty of the Capital. Young Roots and Your Heritage

Heritage Lottery Fund remains committed to funding projects which engage young people with heritage, particularly under the Young Roots programme which is targeted at 13-25 year olds who want to explore their heritage and develop skills. Young people can still apply using the current Young Roots and Your Heritage application packs up to 30 June 2008.

The pre-application form has also been revised and requires applicants to register their contact details.

Awards for All: ongoing funding

Schools, health bodies or voluntary agencies can apply for up to £10,000 grants running over two years, for community based projects enabling people to take part in arts, sport, heritage, education, environmental or health projects. Big Lottery Changing Spaces

Changing Spaces is an environmental programme focusing on three priority areas: community spaces, local community enterprise and access to the natural environment. It will invest around £200 million in environmental projects across England. For more information on the various projects, please visit their website.

This EU programme promotes young people's active citizenship and provides young people with fewer opportunities aged 13 to 30 the chance to undertake voluntary activities. There are various actions which run throughout the year. ec.europa.eu/youth/index_en.htm.
 
Futurebuilders England is seeking applications from third sector groups looking to win public sector contracts in a wide range of fields, including sport, recreation and leisure; environment; waste and recycling; legal aid, and arts groups. The ‘Interim Report from the Futurebuilders Evaluation Team’ is available at www.shu.ac.uk/cresr and for all application information visit: www.futurebuilders-england.org.uk.

Prince's Trust Community Cash Awards

Prince's Trust Community Cash Awards are grants of £5,000 which help young people aged 14-16 struggling in school or those aged 16-25 and working less than 16 hours per week to come up with an idea that will improve their local community life. Social networking

The Home Office has published the first UK Social Networking Guidance providing advice for industry, parents and children about how to stay safe online. This has been published alongside new measures to make it harder for child sex offenders to meet children online.
A separate report from Ofcom reveals that nearly half of all children who have access to the internet have their own personal profile on a social networking site. While some of these are on sites intended for younger children, the presence of underage users on social networking sites intended for those aged 13 or over was confirmed by the research. 

Step inside our shoes

Around 800 young people from across the UK contributed to children's charity NCH's six-month consultation on gun and knife crime. Of those, 36 per cent were concerned about gangs, and 29 per cent said they had been affected by gun and knife crime. The results of the survey have been published in the report Step Inside Our Shoes, part of NCH's Growing Strong campaign

Mentoring, befriending and drugs

The Home Office has published new guidance for mentors and befrienders on drugs and related issues affecting young people. It contains advice on talking about drugs with young people; drug facts, risks and the law; and what to do if there is a problem. Download a copy here.

Vulnerable children

The National Foundation for Educational Research has published new research on meeting the needs of the most vulnerable children across the five Every Child Matters outcomes. Please click here for more information.

Youth Access to create advice and guidance qualification

Advice and counselling group Youth Access is looking at creating a youth advice qualification.The move is part of a plan put together by the organisation after it landed funding for three years from the DCSF, the Department of Health and the Big Lottery Fund. Click here for more information

The DCSF has published a revised framework linking outcomes to: the Children’s Plan 2020 goals; National Public Service Agreements and National Indicators; and DCSF departmental goals. Click here for the framework

The Candle Project, a Department of Health project undertaken by the Association for Real Change, has published a resource offering guidance and resources for frontline staff working with children and young people who have a learning disability and mental health issues. http://www.clearthoughts.info

Too Young to Die 

Road safety charity Brake is targeting youth workers, and others doing group work with young people, with free training to reach the young people they work with. The organisation hopes to use the approach to cut the number of young drivers who are involved in accidents. This course takes place in Watford on 4 July 2008.

Young People & Money is a free one day training course that has been designed to better equip organisations, who work with young people (aged 16—25) who are NEET, in providing them with a greater understanding along with supporting toolkits, with the aim of helping young people make more sense of their money and increase their financial capability.
